Get Involved
There is a place for you here.
Our community, like most Rural Oregon communities, has always been willing to lend a hand, share what they know, keep an eye on a neighbor, or show up when something needs doing.
That is how much of our work began — someone saw a need and stepped forward.
Today, neighbors volunteer throughout the valley in many different ways. Some help with wildfire preparedness. Some walk the Disston Pathway and care for the land and water around us. Others help deliver the Row River Review, organize community gatherings, serve on Neighborhood Teams, support older residents, or bring a skill we didn’t know we needed until someone offered it.
You do not need special training to begin. You do not need a great deal of time. And you certainly don’t have to do everything.
Start with what interests you.
Help Your Neighborhood Prepare
When the power goes out, cell phones stop working, a tree blocks the road, or wildfire threatens, knowing the people around you makes a difference.
Neighborhood Teams bring people who live near one another together before an emergency. Join the team in your area, help check on a neighbor, share information, or help us start a team where one is still needed.
Help Care for the Land and Water
The Row River, our creeks, forests and pathways need people paying attention.
Volunteers walk the Disston Pathway, pick up trash, watch for illegal dumping and abandoned vehicles, report damage, and help care for several miles of land that no one person could watch alone.
Our watershed work is growing too, particularly as we learn more about the effects of wildfire on our slopes, streams, roads and water.
Help Keep the Valley Connected
There are about 500 households spread across nearly twenty miles of the Row River Valley, and cell and internet service can be unreliable or nonexistent.
Help deliver the Row River Review, set up for Think Tank Tuesday, welcome people at a community gathering, share information with a neighbor, or help us reach someone who may otherwise miss it.
Sometimes an hour is all we need.
Bring What You Know
Some of the best help we have received began with someone saying, “I can do that.”
Maybe you know how to run equipment, fix a fence, organize a meal, work with a computer, teach a class, write a grant, identify a plant, read a map, repair something, or make a room full of people feel welcome.
Tell us.
And if you see a need that isn’t on this page, tell us that too.
Many of our projects began because someone noticed something that needed attention and was willing to help do something about it.
Come Join Us
Come for a morning. Deliver a few newspapers. Walk a section of the pathway. Help set up chairs. Join your Neighborhood Team. Come to a Think Tank Tuesday. Help with one project and see how it feels.
Tell us what interests you, what you enjoy doing, or what you have a little time to help with.
We’ll find a place to start.
